RIP this store This store has closed. As part of the migration of chain stores out of downtown Portland, the store is no longer open. Stores remain in the suburbs, but not in the city.

This review is specifically about Paul (in bicycle repair). Simply stated: Paul is amazing. He is a model employee: kind, intelligent, caring, hard-working, and exemplifies perfect customer service. On two occasions I have had to bring in my bike for repair (1. due to a flat and 2 my bike was recovered -- after being stolen -- and required a "check-up"). Paul is exactly the reason why a customer remains loyal to an a retail establishment. He is always attentive -- and is ready to add a sense of humor to the conversation/transaction. It saddens me that REI is leaving Portland. I have always had exceptionally positive experiences at the location. Our mayor should be ashamed to have such an institution leave our community under his "leadership" (that's a challenging word to type when associated with M. Wheeler). Anyway, I don't want our local government's dysfunction to cloud this positive review of Paul. It has been a true pleasure. Cheers!

In the past, we had not shopped at REI much. We are planning an upcoming trip and so the last few months for birthdays, and "just because we need them". I've been into both the downtown Portland and Clackamas REI for shoes, binoculars, socks, and other misc. Their staff is knowledgeable and SO helpful! Their return policy is amazing. I even signed up as a member, which now gives us a 1 yr return policy. Yes, I could buy off Amazon or one of the big box store, but having the knowledge and customer service at REI is worth the drive. The person who helped me today even spent time explaining the difference between cotton vs synthetic vs merino wool socks and helping me to try them on. Yes they let me try on socks :) happy feet!

It doesn't get better than REI when it comes to equipment and apparel for outdoor activities . We have been purchasing from here for years now and have loved the customer service as well as the sturdy purchases that have lasted us years . so many well known brands under one roof and They also guarantee one of the most generous return policies in retail. If you don't like a product, you can return it for any reason within one year and receive a full refund. You can return a defective product at anytime for repair or replacement too . The store associates really engage with you if you have questions or looking for recommendations and ten out of ten times I have loved the purchases they helped me make . They also have rental services for a lot of equipment but you have to book a little proactively because they are pre booked months in advance for certain stuff. I also love the used equipment section they have which are gently used and reasonably priced however its restricted to members only .Which brings me to the membership I feel it's a steal and pays for itself if you even make only few purchases. One downside is that I find the store a little haphazard , its not well organized or categorized so you really have to go around looking at both floors . Pricing wise yes its expensive but the products do last a long time so you are basically saving money in the long run . I love this brand as well as the store and would highly recommend them for all outdoor needs.
